Friday Harbor PC Celebrates

School House and Church Building

Friday
Harbor Presbyterian Church
Sesquicentennial 1860-2010

by Rev. Dr. Joe Bettridge

This is the first of several historic photos to be published courtesy of the San Juan Historical Society commemorating the long spiritual journey of the Presbyterian Church on San Juan Island. The School House-Church Building on Portland Fair Hill housed the first worship services on the Island. Visiting pastors from the Presbyterian Church in Victoria conducted worship in this building beginning in 1860. The first resident pastor was Rev. T.J. Weekes.  He was sent to San Juan Island from Victoria in 1870 by the Church of Scotland Board of Colonial Missions under the local supervision of Rev. Thomas Summerville, the founding pastor of St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Victoria. Rev. Weekes married Miss Margaret Naylor who continued in her work as the school teacher and church piano player, at the Portland Fair Hill location.
